EUCO: EU governments must stand firm on rule of law

Ahead of tomorrow's European Council Summit, the Greens/EFA group re-iterate its support for the rule of law and urges all Member States to stick to their commitments on the MFF and recovery package.

The Greens/EFA group are also calling for a strong emissions reductions target to be adopted at tomorrow's summit.

Ska Keller MEP, President of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, comments:

"The European Parliament is united in the need to defend the rule of law. We call on Chancellor Angela Merkel to show a clear stance in favour of the rule of law and not to give in to the blackmail attempts of the Hungarian and Polish governments. The German Council Presidency must finally stand clearly behind the rule of law mechanism, Angela Merkel needs to turn her announcement at the beginning of the German Presidency into reality.

"We also call on the governments to finally agree on an ambitious climate target. We cannot wait any longer for bold climate action to bring an end to the forests burning, arctic ice melting and people and animals suffering from drought. The European Parliament took a bold step in demanding a European Climate Law that works with the Paris climate agreement and urges for a 60% reduction in emissions by the year 2030. The heads of states and governments should follow in taking bold climate action and bring negotiations on the European Climate Law to a close. Europe must lead the world in climate action."
