Exhibition: Stand up for Human Rights - Honoring the assassinated Human Rights Defenders Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola

From Monday, December 11th to Thursday, December 14th 2023, selected pieces which were submitted for the international art competition under the theme “Semillas Que Florecen / The Seed Rises” will be exhibited in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The art was created in memory of killed Human Rights Defenders Bety Cariño from Mexico and Jyri Jaakkola from Finland.

On 27 April 2010, Human Rights Defenders Bety Cariño from Mexico and Jyri Jaakkola from Finland were murdered when they were part of a humanitarian caravan, supporting the autonomous community of San Juan Copala in the Triqui region of Oaxaca, Mexico. More than a decade later there is still no justice, but the search for justice for Bety and Jyri and the demands for punishment have not stopped.

The art exhibition will show pieces submitted for an international art competition under the theme “Semillas Que Florecen / The Seed Rises”. Family members, friends and the legal representation of Bety and Jyri in Mexico and Finland had called on artists in solidarity to contribute to the competition, keeping the memory of Bety and Jyri alive. They will be present at the exhibition opening.

The opening of the exhibition “Stand up for Human Rights - Honoring the assassinated Human Rights Defenders Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola” will take place on Monday 11th December at 18:00 at the Emilio Colombo Exhibition Space (WEISS, 1st floor) in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
